Adaptogens might just sound like a trendy wellness buzzword, but this group of healing herbs has deep roots in ancient medicine. Long before they found their way into smoothie powders and mushroom coffee, adaptogens were a cornerstone of Ayurvedic and Traditional Chinese Medicine, known for helping the body stay resilient under stress - hence the name, adaptogen.

Now, modern science is starting to catch up, and the research is confirming what traditional systems have known all along: adaptogens help support the entire body, from your stress response to your gut health.

In this post, we’ll briefly break down what adaptogens actually are, how they support the gut-brain axis, and which ones are worth trying first if you’re looking to calm your nervous system, improve digestion, or just feel a little more balanced overall.

The Magical Healing Power of Adaptogens (And Why You probably Need Them)

At their core, adaptogens are compounds found in specific herbs and mushrooms that help the body adapt to stress. To qualify as an adaptogen, a plant must:

  • Help the body resist a wide range of stressors (physical, emotional, chemical, or biological)

  • Promote internal balance or homeostasis

  • Be non-toxic and safe for long-term use

Adaptogens work by supporting the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, which regulates your stress response. When this system is constantly triggered (hello, modern life) it can lead to fatigue, poor sleep, inflammation, and digestive problems.

That’s where adaptogens come in: they help your body self-regulate so you can function without burning out.

Adaptogens and Mood, Energy, and Sleep

Adaptogens don’t just work in the background; they can change how you feel on a day-to-day basis. Here’s how:

Mood Support

Adaptogens help modulate neurotransmitters like serotonin, dopamine, and GABA, which influence everything from motivation to emotional regulation. Some compounds even slow down the enzymes that break down serotonin, essentially prolonging its feel-good effects.

Many adaptogens also regulate the HPA axis (your brain–adrenal communication loop), which reduces stress-induced mood swings and emotional overwhelm. Others, like holy basil and rhodiola, help balance cortisol spikes that would otherwise lead to irritability, anxiety, or emotional reactivity.

Reduced Fatigue

Some adaptogens act directly on the mitochondria, the energy-producing engines inside your cells. This helps increase ATP production (your body’s energy currency), making you feel more alert without the jitters. Rhodiola, for example, is known to reduce fatigue and increase stamina. Cordyceps mushrooms may improve athletic performance and oxygen uptake.

Many others like ginseng and maca also improve blood circulation, ensuring your muscles and brain get the nutrients they need to sustain physical and mental energy. Over time, consistent use can lead to a more balanced stress response, fewer energy dips, and better endurance.

Better Sleep

If your nervous system is in a constant state of alert, deep sleep can be hard to come by. Adaptogens like ashwagandha and reishi help calm the mind and support deeper, more restorative sleep by regulating stress hormones and calming the nervous system.

Adaptogens also help regulate circadian rhythms (your internal clock) which influences when you feel naturally tired or awake. Some, like magnolia bark and jujube seed, gently increase GABA activity, which signals the brain to slow down and prepare for rest.

By reducing nighttime cortisol and promoting calm, adaptogens can help you fall asleep faster, stay asleep longer, and wake up feeling genuinely restored. Sleep is so important for your digestive system to recover and repair itself, so make sure you’re prioritizing your zzz’s!

Final Thoughts

Adaptogens aren’t actually a magic pill, but they are a powerful tool. Whether you’re dealing with digestive inflammation, stress, fatigue, or burnout, these herbs can help your body remember how to regulate itself again.

Start by choosing one or two adaptogens that speak to your current needs. Try them in a tea, tincture, smoothie, or capsule, and observe how your body responds (and remember always consult a healthcare provider before starting!)
